CONCENTRATOR: INTRODUCTORY CURRICULUM

The Introductory course offers secondary education students with interest in emergency dispatching a unique insight into the basic functions and responsibilities of a 911 emergency dispatcher.

ACADEMIC AND TECHNICAL STANDARDS. Curriculum aligns to CTE Anchor and Pathway standards, Career Readiness and Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) emergency dispatch standards.

PATHWAY. Curriculum can be implemented as a Concentrator in a Public Safety, or Health Science/Medical Technology pathway sequence.

TECHNICAL TRAINING. Student will gain command and proficiency of basic technical content with the primary objective of achieving competency in general occupational concepts. Student retention is measured through a suite of assessment exercises designed to ready the student for promotion to advanced occupational CTE content.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS. Course offers a comprehensive and structured introduction to interpersonal skillsets required in emergency dispatching. These basic interpersonal skills include, effective verbal and written communications, listening practices, multi-tasking, strategic problem solving, working within a team concept and application of leadership principles.

SIMULATION. Skill development is sharpened through computer generated emergency simulation. Emergency dispatching requires that a practitioner be adept at handling a number of possible life threatening events. Critical and tactical training tools allow students to work at managing chaotic events in a stressful environment, all while maintaining self-composure and professionalism. Introductory course simulation training tools give students exposure to the operational aspect of emergency dispatching.

INDEPENDENT STUDIES. Independent study methods are utilized for the development of basic skill sectors like entry level keyboarding and elemental call center procedure. Students are continually encouraged to self-evaluate individual performances and apply corrective actions with little supervision. While the ultimate goal remains skill improvement, students also experience personal growth through added responsibility.

CAREER CLUSTERS. Students gain insight into various occupations categorized within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security Career Cluster. Students learn about various occupations within the selected career cluster. As a result, students gain a better understanding of how agencies like local law enforcement and fire, emergency medical services, District Attorney, FBI, Homeland Security, US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Corrections and other prominent public service entities operate to achieve their stated mission goals.

SWBAT: Upon completion of the Concentrator Introductory curriculum, student will have gained a basic knowledge and understanding of the operational responsibilities of an emergency dispatcher. Academically, student will be exposed to emergency dispatching history, concepts, technologies and practices. Technically, student will have participated in call-taking simulation, key board proficiency development and interpersonal skill building. After successfully passing this course, student will be fully prepared for Capstone curriculum.

CAPSTONE: ADVANCED CURRICULUM

CTE Emergency Dispatcher Capstone: Advanced curriculum prepares secondary education students for certification testing. Upon completion of this course, students will be fully prepared to enter the field of emergency dispatching and assume the duties of an entry level Dispatcher I category employee. Students who successfully complete the rigorous coursework are awarded a 911 Communication Officer certificate. Certification is awarded by a leading industry training authority and aligns to emergency communication industry training standards.

ACADEMIC AND TECHNICAL STANDARDS. Curriculum aligns to CTE Anchor and Pathway standards and Common Core Career Readiness standards. Additionally, MindFLEX Education utilizes the technical and certification services of National Emergency Communication Institute (NECI). NECI certification complies with The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) ANSI National Public Safety 9-1-1 Training Standard, National Emergency Number Association (NENA) 56-004 – TTY/TDD Call Handling Standard, NENA 56-005 - NENA Call Answering Standard and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1061, and Peace Officer Standards Training (POST).

ADVANCED TECHNICAL STUDIES. Student will gain command and proficiency of advanced technical curriculum content with the primary objective being certification. Students receive extensive review of basic emergency dispatcher concepts and progress to more complex technical content after retention milestones have been achieved. Student retention is measured through a suite of assessment tools designed to ready the student for certification testing.

ADVANCED INTERPERSONAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT. In the advanced level course students participate in various strategic assessment exercises where the goal is to develop and refine interpersonal skill concepts in greater depth and to apply learned concepts in simulated environments.

SIMULATION. Advanced simulation training software provide students continued exposure to various operational situations of emergency dispatching. Simulation content and call scenarios are progressively more complex and require application of advanced techniques and processes. Simulation activities are self-paced and self-scoring to that the CTE instructor has ability to manage large classroom sizes and offer additional instruction to those in need.

CERTIFICATION. The ability to obtain certification is a driving feature of the CTE Emergency Dispatcher program. To fulfill our goal of creating a CTE curriculum that produces immediate benefit to students, MindFLEX has incorporated the testing and certification services of National Emergency Communications Institute (NECI). Students meeting NECI's certification testing standards will be issued a 911 Communications Officer Certificate.

CAREER PREPERATION. Coursework includes extensive career preparation training and instruction. Students receive training on resume writing, interview techniques and practices, professionalism and personal behavior in the workplace and constructive role-playing. The hardest aspect of employment is getting the job.

SWBAT: Upon completion of the Capstone Advanced curriculum, student will have developed the necessary technical, academic and interpersonal skills required to successfully navigate the emergency dispatcher pre-hire process. In addition, student will now possess the occupational skills to confidently operate as an entry-level emergency dispatcher in a communication center. Finally, student that meets curriculum assessment specifications will be awarded a 9-1-1 Communications Officer certificate. This type of certification demonstrates to potential employers that the student has received occupational training in accordance with emergency communications industry-recognized training standards (see Academic and Technical Standards section above). Student is now fully prepared to pursue an entry-level position as emergency dispatcher with a public service agency.

VOCATIONAL: STAND-ALONE WITH CERTIFICATION

The Vocational: Stand-Alone Certification curriculum was developed specifically for post-secondary vocational and adult education.

CAREER-READINESS. The Vocational: Stand-Alone Certification curriculum aligns to career readiness practices and is ideal for use by districts offering career-oriented adult education courses, or community colleges offering adult vocational training courses. Not only will post secondary students have access to vital occupational and academic content, they will also gain valuable insight into both pre-hire and post-hire probationary employment processes.

TIME FACTOR. Unlike secondary education, post secondary curriculum requires greater framework flexibility. Our post secondary curriculum is modified many components of the vocational curriculum to give administrators and educators greater control over course and program scheduling.

MORE STUDENT INDEPENDENCE. Unlike secondary education, post-secondary curriculum requires greater framework flexibility. As a result, we implemented the necessary modifications into the curriculum giving administrator's greater control over scheduling.
